Cognitive Process Profile (CPP)

The CPP profiles peoples’ capacity for strategic, tactical and operational decision making in complex and unfamiliar environments. This ensures that organisations develop and place their leaders into roles where they can perform at their best and deliver the highest results.

Applications

  • succession planning
  • senior level recruitment
  • talent management
  • identification of leadership potential
  • executive coaching
  • career coaching
  • leadership development
  • matching people to roles according to level of complexity

Process

Computerised simulation exercise producing a  feedback report to be delivered by a qualified practitioner.

Overview

Today many organisations are experiencing high levels of complexity and uncertainty.  The Cognitive Process Profile identifies the level of complexity and uncertainty at which people can do their best work, the nature of their potential, and their ability to learn. These are represented in five environments drawn from the Stratified Systems Theory of Elliot Jaques.  Each of these environments represents a link in the value chain from strategic idea through to the delivery to the customer.  A strategic idea realizes its value as it progresses through the chain. This value is fully realised when the idea is delivered to the customers and meets their needs. Very different ways of thinking are required to be successful in each of the work environments.

Using computerised simulation exercises, participants are monitored on their ability to explore, link, structure, transform, remember, learn and clarify information. The CPP moves beyond the concept of general intelligence as popularised by IQ tests. It measures a number of information processing constructs in an integrated fashion:

  • Cognitive styles (i.e. a person’s general approach to problem solving – particularly in new and unfamiliar situations)
  • Cognitive processes / competencies (i.e. the effectiveness of the cognitive processes used to manage tasks)
  • Meta-cognition (awareness of thinking processes)
  • Learning potential (the capacity of a person to benefit from developmental experiences)
  • Work-related levels of complexity
  • Judgement for pace control

The Cognitive Process Profile uses a unique methodology that evaluates dynamic thinking processes as opposed to right or wrong answers. With a sound theoretical foundation, the CPP has proven cross-cultural application and generates clear diagnostic indications for placement and development purposes. Over 170,000 people have taken the CPP worldwide. The CPP is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish and Cantonese.
