Through transcending their constraints and increasing capacity leaders are able to create the future when operating in a complex, ambiguous, and uncertain world. They are able to lead with: -
- Clarity – Leaders are able to see the world’s dynamic complexity the identify the early change makers
- Authenticity – Leaders are able to witness their behaviour and are guided by the authenticity of their moral compass
- Agility – Leaders are able witness and manage their thoughts and emotions to ensure their decisions and actions are appropriate for the situation.

Without transcending their constraints and increasing capacity leaders can only react to change, not create the future. They tend to either: -
- Comply – Leaders become subservient to the key players and / or drivers in their operating environment
- Protect – Leaders try to escape from the uncertainty of change to avoid any threats
- Control – Leaders try to take over in an attempt to gain certainty in a changing situation
